Report on Maldives Elections released

PRESS RELEASE

South Asia Democratic forum an Independent think tank based in Brussels, today released a report on “An independent and unofficial Fact-Finding Mission took place on 16th August 2018 ahead of “23rd September elections in Maldives.

The delegation was made up of three European Parliament MEPs, Tomas Zdechovsky,Maria Gabriela Zoana and Ryszard Czarnecki; and two European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Members, Madi Sharma and Henri Malosse.

The fact-finding mission took place in light of the state of emergency imposed on 5th February, 2018, which saw the arrest of the Chief Justice and the imprisonment of opposition leaders including former Presidents and their families. Other members of opposition parties fled the country and are now in exile, and thus forbidden to contest the Presidential Elections.

The report makes recommendations to the International Community which are

  1. calls for free and fair elections

  2. a new EU declaration announcing a ban on investments and tourism, should the federal elections prove to be fraudulent.

  3. The opposition has also expressed fears that the EC will announce falsified results.

  4. President can also announce a State of Emergency and suspend all laws andthe Constitution. In such a scenario, the EC can transport the ballot boxes to a central location for the vote counting.

The report also urges the “All actions from international partners wishing to uphold democracy through free and fair elections must insist on transparency and redress for those who have abused the true voter wishes.”
